Helping your child grow into a happy and healthy adult.
Many spinal problems seen in adults begin as early as birth; the birthing process itself can cause stress to the infant’s spine and developing nervous system. The resulting irritation to the nervous system caused by spinal and cranial misalignments can cause many newborn health complaints; nursing difficulties, colic, sleep disturbances, breathing problems, constipation, bedwetting, and chronic ear infections can often be traced to nervous system stress.
Since spinal trauma can occur at birth, many parents bring their newborns in right away. As the infant grows, learning to hold up the head, rolling over, sitting, crawling, and walking are all activities that are affected by spinal alignment and are important times to have a child checked by a Doctor of Chiropractic.
As children grow it is important to make sure there is balance between their developing skeletal and nervous system. Imbalances during this period may be as obvious as common conditions in babies (colic, constipation, plagiocephaly (flattening of the skull), etc) or lead to more problems later in life such as scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine).
Chiropractic checkups during these times of growth and development will allow the proper correction to be made and help avoid health complaints seen later in adults.
As children start to participate in activities or sports, spinal misalignments may occur. A common reason parents seek care for their children is trauma or injury. It should be noted that kids may or may not have pain or symptoms; parents may notice signs of imbalance that don’t include pain ie – walking on toes, walking with a limp, or a head tilt.
Parents also seek our assistance in educating their kids on posture and general health; this is specifically noted in conditions such as “text neck” and slouching.
It is important to understand that the Doctor of Chiropractic does not treat conditions or diseases. The expertise of the chiropractor is in checking the child’s spine for misalignments that may impair the nervous system function therefore affecting overall body function. The nervous system controls and coordinates the function of all the systems in the body; circulatory, digestive, respiratory, hormonal, eliminative, and immune system.
The Doctor of Chiropractic will take a history and perform an exam to determine if spinal misalignments exist. Chiropractic adjusting procedures are modified to fit a child’s size, weight, and unique condition. Adjustments are gentle, safe, and specific. Most parents report their children enjoy their chiropractic adjustments and look forward to subsequent visits.
