Which Vitamins Should My Kid Take?

Which Vitamins Should My Kid Take?

As a parent of a toddler and (almost) “kindergardener”, I am always searching for new ways to get all the nutrition my kids need while making it fun. And let’s be honest, during the toddler years sometimes it’s just about getting them to eat SOMETHING!

But when it comes to optimizing their nutrition and making sure they are getting all the nutrients their growing bodies need, there is one thing I never have to fight my kids on: their “Vitamins”! They literally line up in the morning and are so excited for them. And if I forget them they always remind me.

Here is what my kids get every day. Generally, depending on their age and time of year (more support during the winter months and cold/flu season), I usually give my kids a probiotic, essential fatty acid, multivitamin-mineral support, and vitamin D.

The below information is pulled from Genestra Brands, which is who we trust and use in our clinic. Please refer to their website for more information and research ☺

There are billions of bacteria living in the intestinal tract, often referred to as “microflora.” Probiotics are live, “friendly” bacteria in the microflora that work to keep a healthy intestinal balance, reducing the amount of harmful bacteria while replenishing and maintaining beneficial strains. Maintaining this balance is critical for overall health.

It’s important to note that not all probiotics are created in the same way. Genestra brand probiotics are derived from Human Micro Flora. Human strain probiotics are proven safe to use during pregnancy and with infants, children and adults.  Naturally resistant to stomach acidity, human strain probiotics stick to the intestinal tract very well insuring maximum effectiveness. Genestra brand probiotics are clinically proven in randomized, double blind, controlled human trials for safety and efficacy.

While probiotics may be added in foods such as yogurt and smoothies, direct probiotic supplementation provides the highest amount of beneficial live and active cultures. Probiotics should be a routine part of a daily lifestyle to help maintain optimal health conditions.

Essential Fatty Acids:

Kid’s growing and developing bodies require essential fatty acids; they help support cognitive health and brain function in addition to the development of the brain, eyes, and nerves. Our bodies can’t make them, so it’s important to make sure they are part of our diets! Adding an essential fatty acid to your kid’s daily routine is a great way to make sure they are getting what they need.

For infants to adults – Cod Liver Oil Forte

VITAMIN + ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID SUPPLEMENT

  • Cod liver oil is a source of omega-3 fatty acids, including DHA and EPA. DHA is the most abundant omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the brain, and it is highly present on neuronal synapses. As a result, its primary role is to support cognitive health and brain function, including both pre- and postnatal brain development. Rods and cones in the retina are also rich in DHA, and the omega-3 fatty acid is necessary for the proper development of retinal structure and visual acuity in young children. Cod liver oil naturally contains high levels of vitamins A and D, which support healthy bones, teeth and immune function. Vitamin A also promotes eye and skin health

For Kids (1+years) – Berry DHA

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACID FORMULA

  • Berry DHA combines emulsified omega-3 fatty acids, anthocyanins, and vitamin C in a powerful formula that supports brain functioning and cardiovascular health. Omega-3 fatty acids provide numerous health benefits, and emulsified oils may offer improved absorption. As emulsified oils may be better exposed to pancreatic lipase during digestion, their incorporation into chylomicrons for transport through the body may be enhanced. DHA supports pre- and postnatal brain development, and promotes proper eye development and visual acuity in infants. Recent research suggests that DHA and EPA support already healthy triglyceride levels by promoting fatty acid metabolism. Berry DHA is high in vitamin C, an antioxidant that helps to maintain immune functioning, and supports healthy growth and the repair of body tissues. Anthocyanins also provide antioxidant protection, and support immune and cardiovascular health.

For School-Aged Kids (4+years) – DHA Pediaburst

CHEWABLE DHA SUPPLEMENT

  • DHA Pediaburst is a great-tasting combination of DHA and EPA in a chewable softgel format, and is a great alternative for children that have difficulty swallowing capsules. DHA is the most abundant omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid in the brain. It is highly present on neuronal synapses, indicating its primary role in supporting cognitive health and brain function. As rods and cones in the retina are also rich in DHA, the omega-3 fatty acid is necessary for the proper development of retinal structure and visual acuity in young children. Research demonstrates that supplementation with at least 150 mg of DHA per day assists in the development of brain, eye, and nerve tissue in children up to 12 years of age. Additionally, supplementation with at least 100 mg per day of DHA helps to support cognitive health and brain function.

Multivitamin-Mineral Support:

To make sure my kids are getting all the vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and bioflavonoids to help support normal growth and development, I give them a vitamin-mineral supplement daily. These nutrients help maintain normal physiological functioning, including macronutrient metabolism, free radical scavenging activity, and bone, skin and immune health. Here are the three I have used with my kids:

For Toddlers (1+years) – HMF Toddler plus Pro

Has the added benefit of combining probiotic w/multivitamin

  • Vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin D and vitamin K1 help in the development and maintenance of bones, cartilage, teeth and gums
    Tissue support
    • Vitamin C helps in connective tissue formation and helps in wound healing
    • Riboflavin, vitamin B6 and pantothenic acid help in tissue formation
    Cell support
•Folate and vitamin B12 help to form red blood cells
    Additional support
    • Vitamin C and vitamin E as antioxidants for the maintenance of good health
•Vitamin A helps to maintain eyesight, skin, membranes and immune function
•Vitamin A helps to maintain night vision
    • Vitamin C, thiamine, riboflavin, niacinamide, vitamin B6, vitamin B12, folate, biotin and pantothenic acid help the body to metabolize fats and proteins

For Toddlers (1+years to adults) – Pediatri Vite

VITAMIN-MINERAL SUPPLEMENT

  • Helps in the development and maintenance of bones, cartilage, teeth and gums
  • Helps to support eyesight, skin, membranes, immune function, and muscle function
  • Helps in the formation of tissues and red blood cells

For School-Aged Kids (4+years) – Children’s Chewable Vitamins

VITAMIN-MINERAL SUPPLEMENT

  • Supports growth and development throughout childhood

Vitamin D Support:

Our bodies naturally produce Vitamin D when our skin is exposed to sunlight. During the winter months when my kids are not exposed to much sunlight, I usually supplement their diet with Vitamin D drops. Here is my (and their) favourite:

For all ages – D-Mulsion 400

VITAMIN SUPPLEMENT

  • The vitamin D receptor is found on most immune cells, including T cells, B cells, and macrophages, demonstrating an important interaction between vitamin D and the immune system. Vitamin D supplementation has been shown to have supportive effects on a variety of immune cells as well as upper respiratory immune health. Research demonstrates that vitamin D mediates the proliferation of T and B cells, increases the phagocytic activity of macrophages, and promotes a healthy cytokine balance.
